Night shift work raises cancer risks, or not

Is shiftwork carcinogenic? That's what the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)says. This announcement contradicts the August article published by Science Daily "Night Shift Work Not Linked To Increased Risk Of Cancer: Contracts Earlier Study. "

The IARC announcement in December is an important one but clearly more work needs to be done. Society simply can't stop running 24/7. So where does the truth lie? More research is needed. This study found a slightly elevated risk of certain cancers, for certain shiftworkers working in two industries. Even if it is found that there's a correlation between shiftwork and cancer, researchers now need to determine what is it about shiftwork, or about shiftworkers and their behavior, that raises the cancer risk.

The Reno Gazette-Journal ran an article on the IARC story, as did many other publications in December.
